Denali World (2017) Premiere on May 7, 2017

WORLD PREMIERE OF FIRST GEORGE DUKE COMMISSION
DENALI WORLD by ALAN CHAN

At the Symphonic Jazz Orchestra's 15th Anniversary Concert

Los Angeles, CA: The Symphonic Jazz Orchestra's 15th Anniversary Concert premiered Denali World written by Alan Chan – the winner of the first George Duke Commissioning Competition, on May 7, 2017 at the Carpenter Center for Performing Arts in Long Beach, California. Named after the SJO's co-music director from 2004 to his passing in 2013, George Duke was a musical pioneer, bringing together the worlds of jazz, funk, r&b, classical and Brazilian music.

Denali World is a musical reflection of Alan’s two-week journey to Alaska as the Artist-in-Residence at the Denali National Park in summer 2016. During his stay, Alan discovered not only the majestic mountains, braided rivers and endless tundra, but also wild animals, hidden streams and colorful mushrooms, all contained in this new work.

The new work was made possible by a grant from The ASCAP Foundation's Louis Armstrong Fund and the SJO's Commissioning Club.

Created in 2002, the 67-member Symphonic Jazz Orchestra is dedicated to blending the worlds of jazz and classical music through its commissioning, performing and educational programs. Led by Music Director Mitch Glickman, the ensemble has performed throughout Southern California with leading guest artists including Dave Grusin, Christian McBride, Raul Midon, Lee Ritenour, The Yellowjackets, and George Duke. The orchestra’s debut recording “Looking Forward Looking Back” featuring George Duke’s “Dark Wood: Bass Concerto for McBride” was recently released on Mack Avenue Records.

Besides Alan Chan’s Denali World, this concert also featured Gordon Goodwin’s Fantasia for Soprano Sax and Orchesra, written for saxophonist Eric Marienthal. Singer Jane Monheit celebrated Ella Fitzgerald's Centennial by performing Ella's classic jazz arrangements with SJO.
